totally random topic

This is going to be a very weird question for some of you and I know it. When you were little, did any of you just randomly get scared and start crying just because cars wouldn't start? I was that way myself. And when they started up and people would rev them up, I'd start running and screaming. Just thought I'd ask that question for the heck of it. lol

Not cars exactly but certainly a chainsaw or other immediate noises that would burst upon the scene. You're right this is the very first time I've even ever heard of it being discussed.
Happened to me, much to the annoyance of those around me. I should think it would be quite natural, only because we live in an industrial / postindustrial era, these sounds are quite common. It would not be unreasonable for a sighted child to be scared witless if a gigantic burst of light that looked like a fireball came out of nowhere. Since fireballs like that are not common, it is no annoyance if a child were frightened like that. If we lived in pre-industrial times, or perhaps postmechanical postmodern times we don't know of yet, then such a loud noise would be rare, so a child frightened by something like that would not have been such a nuisance to the surrounding populations. It's all a matter of the era and surroundings.

It's sort of hard to explain in my situation. I guess I used to think that vehicles were people and had feelings or something like that - I don't know exactly. I would just start crying when cars broke down and wouldn't start. As I said, I know this is sort of a strange topic, but yeah.

This is definitly weird, so I'll contribute my own weirdness to the pile. My mom did act as though objects and appliances did have feelings. We had a washing machine that would make this really loud popping sound as it went in to the spin cycle. One day, when I was about 3 or 4, it scared me really bad, so Mom ran over to it and started hitting it, saying, "Bad washing machine." I also remember once, that she had a little angel that sat on her christmastree, and one year, she took it out of storage, and the light had burned out in it. She fiddled with it for a while, then started talking about how stubborn this little angel was. "She won't light upp for me." (said in anger,) and then, "Oh, I hope she'll be okay," (said as though she truly was concerned about its wellfare.) Just weird, huh?

I like this question,

"...did any of you just randomly get scared and start crying just because cars wouldn't start? "

well, for me I can answer YES!
and not even when being a little kid!
Rather being an adult and out of town...

A gal pal and myself had made a trip out of town,
over 200 miles from
our homes in the City to my family home out in the country.

We were making the return trip
when all of a sudden her car stopped running,
stalled out and she could not get it going for anything.
We each had cell phones, only we were so far out into
the back woods type of area that we could hardly
get a signal...

There were very few other drivers out on the road and
the ones that there were would not stop to offer help.
We made a sign that read,
We are having car problems and would someone please call
the police or a wrecker service for us...

Night was coming on and here we were stranded
with no near by businesses or anything
Just miles and miles in both directions of roads
I had very little battery power left in my cell so I turned it off
thinking I could probably make one more call out
when all of a sudden a van that was driving by
started to slow down
Then of all things they stopped...

Could it be???
Was someone REALLY going to offer to us help???
I didn't know whether to cry or what
and I was scarred for here it was like night coming on
Maybe these people were not offering help
I mean they could be like robbers or something???

As the people got out of their van, a man and a woman,
They started walking towards us...
When all of a sudden....
I simply could NOT Believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was my cousin and her husband.
They had been at a weekend camping outing and
were just on the way back to the City.
They had apparently gotten a 2 hour late start out from camp.
Good thing for us or they would have passed where we were before
we were where we were....

My cousin's husband looked over the engine of the broke down car
and knew it was a problem that he could not repair.
In the meanwhile a cop came by and told us calls came in
saying two were stranded out on the road.
Between the cop and my cousin's husband they were able to get
in contact with a wrecker service....

It was about a 5-hour drive home
and talk about amazement at all how this situation happened.

You know what I want to say that follows is not to upset anyone
or to in any way cram religion down anyone..
It's just that, Yes, as I had shut down my phone to save some power
I also breathed a prayer for help....
Now, anyone can say what they want
but as for me...
I Believe that my prayers were answered that night on that lonely road
out in the middle of seemingly nowhere.

wow. Interesting.

whether y'all believe me or not,

I go across the airport while I'm going to my work in all my working days.

I usually fall asleep if I'm sitting in a bus.

the plane roring or take off sound will scare me the hell out of it and I'll wake up all of a sudden.

this is happening almost all days other than saturdays and sundays.

Raaj.

At first your question struck me as incredibly odd, Michael, and I was about to reflexively dismiss it as just plain weird. Initially I couldnt' think of ever having done anything like this. I don't think I got scared out of nowhere, or if I did, I don't remember. But I do remember attributing feelings to inanimate objects. For example, Mom and I went to buy new pillows for some of the beds in the house when I was about five or six. we were trying to pick out ones for my room. I liked to know what colors things were, even though, having never had vision, I really had no concept of color. Mom told me the colors of the two pillows I most liked, and we chose one. That night, I just bawled, and could not sleep, because all I could think about was that other poor pillow, still left unwanted at the store, not able to come home with me because I'd decided I didn't want that color. I think my Mom thought I was out of my mind.

But I don't know that personifying objects is unique to a blind child. I haven't been around many children, so maybe I'm wrong, but it seems as if that kind of thing could happen to a sighted child as well.

Wow. Finally, I don't feel alone in this respect. Yes, this used to happen to me too, and I started to think something was wrong with me.

Post 10 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Monday, 14-Jun-2010 13:12:52

no, it has never happened to me. it seems a bit odd, to be honest.

Post 11 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Monday, 14-Jun-2010 17:11:25

It hasn't happened since I was a very small child, but it has. I mean, I've since been startled by loud noises, but I didn't scream.

Post 12 by illumination (Darkness is history.) on Monday, 14-Jun-2010 21:09:02

I've gotten over that myself - like I said, it only happened when I was little. Yeah, I know, like I've said a couple times before, this would be a weird question for some of you. Glad to see I'm not the only one who went through this. lol

Post 13 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Tuesday, 15-Jun-2010 6:58:15

I haven't had anything of the kind happen since I was small either, and really, the only time I can remember something like it is the one incident I described. There may have been others, but I was too young to remember them. I will occasionally still get startled by loud noises, but now I'm more likely to swear than anything else. I mean, I think any of us would agree that it's pretty scary when you're crossing a street, and a few police cars and fire trucks come by with all sirens blaring, or you get motorcycles, etc.

Naturally, that'll startle most people, but fear is one of those things you try to learn to control when you grow up. No offense to those who have extreme fears. The mind is a very powerful thing, and you really shouldn't be to blame for it, as long as you try your best to keep it under control.

Post 15 by illumination (Darkness is history.) on Tuesday, 15-Jun-2010 21:11:57

Yep, and some little kids just don't know how to control themselves when it comes to that, while others just naturally learn how to do it. I'm 20 years old now, and of course I've learned how to keep all that stuff under control, so Jessica, you're right on the fact that when you grow up, you learn how to keep things under control, including fear.

Post 16 by OceanDream (An Ocean of Thoughts) on Wednesday, 16-Jun-2010 16:33:31

I was the same way when I was a little kid. All I knew is that something was scaring me, I didn't like it, and I would do whatever it took to make that known.
